What's Inside a Watch
Questions about a watch? Call us or e-mail us at Watch Questions

ANALOG - Uses hour and minute hands to show time.

AUTOMATIC - Self winding mechanical movement. We recommend the VALJOUX movement.

BEZEL - The ring around most sports watches to help track elapsed time.

BRACELET - Band or strap in either metal, leather rubber or other material.

CHRONOGRAPH - Nice name for a stop watch. Capabilities do vary quite a bit.

CHRONOMETER - Swiss term for a superior mechanical movement.

CROWN - Stem or pin on the side of the watch. Used to set time etc.

CRYSTAL - The cover on the watch. SAPPHIRE Crystal is the most scratch resistant then glass (mineral crystal) then acrylic and plastic. (Acrylic and plastic can crack and fade with time).

DIAL - The face of the watch.

JEWELS - Usually synthetic but sometimes real jewels are used. They help make mechanical watches run smoother and more accurately.

MECHANICAL - Movement powered by a spring and not a battery. Can be automatic or manually wound.

MOVEMENT - The inner workings of the watch. Two basic movements exist - mechanical and quartz.

QUARTZ - Battery powered movement used in most watches today. Very accurate. The Swiss ETA movement is the premier movement. Careful as the cheaper watches use plastic movements which will not last forever.

SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL - The most scratch resistant of all crystals. Pretty much only a diamond will scratch this.

SCREW-DOWN CROWN - A crown that can be screwed down to make the watch water tight.

TACHYMETER - An add to chronograph watches allowing you to track your speed over a set distance.

WATER RESISTANT - Be very careful here. Makes and models vary greatly and they are not always "water proof". If you want to wear your watch in water make sure that it is designed for that purpose.
